CHAPTER 11

Iturned when a laugh I loved to hear filtered through the crowd. No matter where I was or my surroundings, my entire being was attuned to that voice. It had been since the day she was born.

Jana patted Lucas’ arm as she laughed at something the flamboyant server had said. She wore a slim-fitted, simple black dress. She was beautiful with her simple makeup and shiny black hair, similar to mine. But she never wore outfits in the club that called too much attention to herself. I had asked her about it once and she said she wanted the focus on the girls on the stage.

Charles turned to smile at her when she approached the table.

“Hey, Mom. This is a nice surprise. I didn’t expect to see you tonight. Did Dad stop by your table?”

I nodded. “Right before he went backstage. He said he is up next.”

Jana glanced at the brightly lit stage. “Looks like he is drawing out the suspense. I noticed Cass approach him.”

I glanced at the table where Cass had been sitting, but it was now occupied by two young men. Lucas was flirting outrageously with both of them as he dropped their drinks in front of them.

Jana turned to Charles. “Is this your first time at Club Spice? My name is Jana. I am Raven and Isra’s daughter.”

Charles smiled genuinely, and his hesitancy seemed to evaporate around my daughter. Jana always put people at ease and my bomb drop of being a vampire had shocked Charles. Not that I blamed him. When I was a witch, I would have been as comfortable as that time I asked for directions only to find I was standing in the lobby of the hotel I was trying to find. Yeah, I loved those moments. Not. “Raven was telling me all about you and your father. My brother is Ruby Royalle.”

Jana’s eyes widened. “Max has an amazing voice. Dad has offered him a permanent position. They are working out the details after the show tonight.”

Charles sighed. “He does. I really hope things work out for him here.”

I motioned to the patrons. “Busy night.” The club was packed now, and many people were forced to stand. When I glanced at the door, I noticed Darcy had placed the red velvet cord across the entry, which meant he was only letting people in if somebody left.

Jana glanced at the occupied tables. “It usually is at this time. I should check on Dad. He should be onstage by now.” She leaned over me to give me a quick hug, and my entire body reacted to the pulsing vein beneath her neck.

As I hugged the warm human body I had brought into this world, a wave of conflicting emotions washed over me. Jana’s scent was as familiar to me as my own and her arms around me created that same sense of warmth and comfort it always had. But beneath the overwhelming love for my daughter lurked the new predator within me. And the craving associated with vampiric nature rose from the depths of my soul.
